Summer selling tips – make the most of the season!
Long evenings, summer sunshine and abundant gardens make this an ideal time of year to sell your home. However, although the setting may be the icing on the cake, house selling experts recommend you pay as much attention to the inside of your home as the outside, to make sure it creates a really good first impression.
We've outlined a few simple steps to help you below:
- Clean your windows until they are sparkling on both sides – hopefully they will catch some seasonal sunlight but also allow a lovely view of your garden. Draw any curtains or blinds right back to let in light.
- Ensure the purpose of each room is obvious – a popular 'house doctor' recommendation – but essential to give viewers a feel for the dimensions of your rooms. Although you may use the spare room for storage, consider putting a bed in there so it is easy to visualise as a bedroom.
- Open the windows to let fresh air in. At this time of year it shouldn't get cold, and a musty smelling room can be off-putting for potential buyers.
If any of your rooms are naturally dark, add a few table lamps to brighten them up and avoid them feeling gloomy. Paint walls in pale colours.

Give your home a feeling of space and calm by removing clutter and clearing surfaces. Start with the entrance hall or porch, putting away shoes and coats then work your way through until you're happy that everything that can be put away has been.
For prospective buyers who don't have pets, pet food and bedding can look (and smell) unpleasant so it's a good idea to stash them away for the duration of a visit. It may also be prudent to arrange for your dog to be taken for a walk during viewings, as some people are nervous of dogs, or wary if they have young children with them.
And finally, your garden may not need much to look good, but think about how you can position garden furniture to create a comfortable outdoor area, to enjoy it to the full.
